PORTLAND (WGME) – Maine Congressman Jared Golden introduced 14 separate bills Thursday that he says will help to get corruption and dark money out of politics.
Among other things, the bills would bar members of congress and senior White House officials from trading stocks.
The bills would also keep them from accepting any foreign money, and require all political action committees to reveal their donors.
That last part currently goes against supreme court rulings like "Citizens United," which have upheld donations as "speech" and protected privacy for individuals and corporations.
Golden says that needs to change too.
“The idea that corporations are Constitutionally protected the same as individuals when it comes to political speech in the form of millions of dollars of money, is ridiculous," Golden said.
The plans face an uphill climb in congress, where so far, similar plans have failed to gain enough bi-partisan support to pass.
