MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway is asking federal and state governments to extend coronavirus relief measures through April 2021.

Conway said Madison residents and people across the state will face an unprecedented wave of unemployment, foreclosures and evictions. She is also calling upon the state to continue its moratorium on late payments for utility bills which is set to begin July 25.

“This is unacceptable,” Conway said during a Citizen Action of WI event Wednesday. “People need help. The pandemic has created unprecedented public health and economic challenges and we need every level of government to take action.”

Conway said the city is acting in several ways – upholding public health best practices, supporting small businesses, funding culturally competent organizations – but the state needs to take action as well.

She called on federal policy makers to pass another COVID federal aid package that will reach local communities -- one that will expand unemployment benefits and federal aid for childcare, helping small businesses keep their doors open and support local governments.

Conway said she is also advocating for the passage of the Heroes Act in Congress, a bill that will infuse $11 million into the Madison community.
