Jim Anderson (Arizona)

Jim Anderson is in his eighth season as head men’s golf coach at the University of Arizona, after being named to the post on June 21, 2012.

Anderson has led a resurgence of Arizona Golf, leading the Wildcats to back-to-back NCAA Regional appearances the past two seasons. The Wildcats’ 2018-19 season featured Arizona’s second-straight Arizona Intercollegiate victory as Anderson’s squad posted a -37 score at its home course of Sewailo. The Wildcats also had Top 5 finishes as a team at the Showdown in the Rockies, the Saint Mary’s Invitational and the Querencia Cabo Collegiate. The impressive season led the Wildcats to the NCAA Louisville Regional, marking the third time Anderson led Arizona to postseason play. Under Anderson’s watch, sophomore Trevor Werbylo had a scoring average of 70.73, which is the third-best single-season scoring average in program history. Werbylo was named honorable mention All-American by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Junior David Laskin, who had a scoring average of 72.18, was named first-team Pac-12 All-Academic, while junior Briggs Duce was named second team and fellow junior Brad Reeves was named honorable mention.

Blaine Woodruff (Pepperdine)

The Pepperdine men’s golf team has seen tremendous success with Blaine Woodruff on staff, including finishing the 2019-20 season as the nation’s #1-ranked team. The program’s associate head coach is in his fourth year with the Waves in 2020-21.

In each of his first two seasons at Pepperdine, Woodruff helped guide the Waves to two West Coast Conference titles. Although the Waves weren’t given the chance to defend their crown in 2020 due to the cancelation of the spring season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Waves were recognized as the nation’s top team in the Bushnell Golfweek coaches poll and by Golfstat. He also worked with Pepperdine’s first National Player of the Year in Sahith Theegala, who won the Ben Hogan and Fred Haskins awards.

Jason D'Amore (LMU)

Jason D’Amore, member of the LMU men’s golf program from 2005-08 and a Class of 2015 Inductee to the LMU Athletics’ Hall of Fame, was named Head Coach of the men’s golf team in June of 2016. His fifth season will be in 2020-21.

Even with the COVID-19 pandemic impacting the country, D’Amore’s Lions are in the midst of a special run in the Spring of 2021. In three straight tournaments, the Lions earned a runner-up finish at the Nick Watney Invitational (Feb. 8-9, 2021), before claiming back-to-back team titles at The Joust at Goose Creek (Feb. 22, 2021) and the Sacramento State Invitational (Mar. 1-2, 2021). All three individual titles in that stretch were won by an individual for the first time in school history, with senior Gavin Cohen winning consecutive events and freshman Riley Lewis following with his first collegiate victory. The records accomplished during this run include a program-record 28-under par (284-275-277—836) team finish in the Nick Watney Invitational led by Cohen finishing second all-time and one stroke off the school record for tournament scoring with his 70-66-67—203, and a team-record 25-stroke victory in a tournament at CBU’s The Joust.

Ryan Donovan (San Diego St.)

Ryan Donovan is in his 18th year as head coach at San Diego State, having elevated his alma mater into a perennial contender on the national stage.

Donovan has coached the Aztecs to 186 top-10 overall tournament finishes, 125 top-five performances, 31 team titles and six NCAA championship appearances, highlighted by a fifth-place tie at nationals in 2012. During his tenure, SDSU has advanced to the NCAA regionals in 15 of 16 campaigns (2020 NCAA championships were canceled) and have also finished no worse than second at the Mountain West championships in six of the last 10 seasons SDSU competed (2020 MW championships were canceled), winning team titles in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Under Donovan’s guidance, Aztec golfers have garnered 32 all-Mountain West accolades and 15 all-region honors, while seven of his pupils have been named to 13 All-America teams. In addition, Donovan has mentored three MW player of the year winners in Nahum Mendoza III (2016), J.J. Spaun (2012) and Aaron Goldberg (2008), as well as the trio of Ricky DeSantis (2014), Riccardo Michelini (2013) and Matt Hoffenberg (2008), who were each named conference freshman of the year in their respective rookie seasons.

Andrew Larkin (Santa Clara)

A successful collegiate assistant and head coach, as well as a professional player, Andrew Larkin is in his first season leading the Santa Clara men’s golf program.

Larkin, hired in May 2020, spent the previous five seasons as an assistant coach with UCLA where he helped direct the Bruins to three NCAA Regional appearances, including a championship berth in 2018, under coach Derek Freeman. UCLA was ranked No. 25 nationally by Golfstat.com when the 2019-20 season was canceled.

A professional player since 2012, Larkin was a finalist for the 2019 Jan Strickland Outstanding Assistant Coach Award.

During his time at UCLA, the program produced eight individual medalists, a Ben Hogan Award final 25 selection, nine all-conference selections and four All-Pac 12 Freshman choices.

He has demonstrated success in recruiting, helping sign the Nos. 3 and 5-ranked players in the country in 2016, two top 20 players in 2017, three top 35 recruits in 2018, and the 14th-ranked American and No. 11-ranked amateur in the world in the class of 2020.

Glen Millican (New Mexico)

Entering his 20th year as head coach of The University of New Mexico men’s golf team in 2020-21, UNM alumnus Glen Millican has enjoyed tremendous success at his alma mater, winning an unprecedented seven Mountain West Championships, including back-to-back titles in 2012-13 and 2013-14. In addition to seven team titles, Millican has also coached six MW Individual Champions (‘03, ‘06, ‘09, ‘11, ’14, ‘19), along with six MW Players of the Year (‘03, ‘07, ‘09, ‘13, ’14, ‘15). He also has led UNM to a pair of fifth-place finishes at the NCAA Championship (2005, 2013).

Christian Newton (Colorado St.)

Christian Newton, a 18-year coaching veteran, is starting his ninth season as the Colorado State men’s golf head coach in 2020-21. Newton was hired Aug. 21, 2012 as the third coach in program history.

In the pandemic-shortened season in 2019-20, the Rams had significant success on the course, winning three consecutive tournaments, including the prestigious Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate in Alabama. The Rams finished the year ranked 19th in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll and earned numerous individual recognitions.

Newton has led CSU to one of its most successful three year spans in program history from 2016-19, with three consecutive Mountain West runner-up finishes, the best three-year performance ever for the Rams. In earning 2018 Mountain West Coach of the Year honors, Newton led CSU to its ranking of No. 40 according to Golfweek and No. 44 according to Golfstat and its first NCAA Regionals berth under his leadership and as a team since 2012. This year, the Rams have again matched that with another NCAA Regionals berth, two team tournament titles, seven top-five finishes, a No. 41 ranking in Golfstat and No. 43 in Golfweek. The Rams have also earned seven consecutive GCAA All-Academic Team awards during his tenure.
