Bogotá, November 26, 2020

During his ‘Prevention and Action’ update today, President Iván Duque Márquez announced Colombia’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 51% by 2030. The goal is part of Colombia’s commitment to combatting climate change, an issue of ever-increasing importance worldwide.

“It will be a country commitment that will be announced during the Climate Summit on December 12th in the United Kingdom. By 2030, we are going to commit to a clear and specific, multisectoral agenda so that we achieve a 51% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. This is an important commitment in the Latin American framework and as a world benchmark,” stated the President.

The head of state pointed out that Colombia represents only 0.4% of total greenhouse gas emissions at the global level, but it is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change. “El Niño, La Niña, coastal erosion and this record hurricane season are all among the effects of climate change we feel here in Colombia,” said President Duque.

“To achieve our goal,” he continued, “we must be united in our purpose to contribute to the conservation of the planet.”

Likewise, he pointed out that “reaching this goal requires more sustainable energy sources, cleaner mobility, continuing to fight and reducing the rate of deforestation, continuing to plant trees throughout the territory and meeting the goal by 2022 to plant 180 million trees, paying for environmental services, protecting the Amazon, the moors.”

Also, he invited all sectors to embrace “the culture of producing while conserving, which plays a transcendental role.”

“Let us also, as individuals, reduce our carbon footprint and do the three Rs – reduce, recycle and reuse – a principle that we can all carry in our daily lives,” said the President.
