The Class Gift: What we can learn

Two foundations teamed up to offer a free community college course for all New Hampshire high school grads to help get students back on track.

In the Spring of 2021, The NH Charitable Foundation and The Foundation for NH Community Colleges partnered to provide NH’s 2021 graduating high school class a head start on their college careers. Over 1,200 students were provided a free three-credit course in the fall at one of our seven NH community colleges. The commitment included $1 million from the two Foundations along with academic advising and other services from the community colleges to help students on educational pathways across the state.

Any student receiving a New Hampshire high school diploma in 2021 is eligible to take a free three-credit course at any of the seven colleges within the Community College System of NH (CCSNH).  Students must be accepted into an Associate Degree or Certificate Program and register for at least one class in Fall 2021 (full or part time).  Our Admissions staff will work with you through the application and enrollment process.

Select the community college that you want to attend and contact the Admissions Office staff directly. The staff will assist you to enroll and register for your course.

Registration for the fall semester is now open, and we encourage students to reach out to Admissions at their chosen college to get the process started. Colleges can generally accept registrations up to a few days before the start of the fall semester, which is August 30, plus the colleges offer a selection of late start classes beginning after that date.

Tuition for a three-credit course and fees up to a combined total of $755.

The cost of textbooks is not included, but CCSNH will work with each student individually to assess needs. Contact the college directly to learn more about what options may exist for accessing additional support.

This gift is specifically for one three-credit course at any of the seven CCSNH colleges. For a list of colleges and their locations, visit CCSNH.edu/Locations.

You can take a class at any NH community college, either online, hybrid or in-person. If your local college does not offer the particular course you want, you are encouraged to work with staff and explore offerings at other NH community colleges.

This gift is exclusively for enrollment in a fall 2021 class.

Yes!  Please contact admissions staff and they will verify your eligibility as a 2021 NH High School graduate.

There may be prerequisites or caps for specific classes. Contact an admissions or academic advisor at the college for additional information.

The gift will have no impact on the majority of financial aid packages. A small group of students whose full financial need is already met will see an adjustment to their aid.

CCSNH colleges have transfer agreements in place with many other colleges. If you know where you would like to transfer credits, consult with your admissions office to request pre-approval of course transferability.

No, the gift of a free class requires acceptance into CCSNH for the duration of the course. In addition, a free class could interfere with financial aid at the (non-CCSNH) college you are attending.
